Now Appearing in Generation Boom
I’ve added a new publication to my client list: Generation Boom, a magazine targeted at baby boomers. What is Generation Boom? “The magazine redefining life, health and finance after forty. It’s the source for conversational, relevant articles that discuss everything from health and fitness to travel and inspirational people.” I’m enjoying my assignments so far. For October/November, I covered the basics of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and put together a useful guide on how to dump your … Read entire article »

This Just In: UNLV Articles
Bet you never thought flashy celebrity chef Guy Fieri had anything in common with a university think tank. But think again: I’ve written about both for UNLV Magazine, the official magazine of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas — not to mention many more news and feature articles about their alumni, research, faculty, and students. I’ve just added a new page with links to work I’ve published in UNLV Magazine. These stories are among the most … Read entire article »

Do you lie to your doctor?
This week’s assignment is to track down the 5 Lies We Tell our Doctors. It got me thinking how going through three pregnancies and childbirth makes you a whole lot less self-conscious about going to the doctor. That’s a lot of hours waiting in paper gowns and shapeless drapes, reading two-month-old copies of magazines I never see anywhere else, like Good Housekeeping and Working Mother (which, don’t get me wrong, I love). When your exam does start, your bodily privacy ends. There you are, as exposed as Britney Spears exiting the limo, and if you’re really lucky there is probably a student shadowing your doc (or, in my case, midwife) that day, and she’s a hands-on learner. At that point, lying seems rather pointless to me. What could I possibly hide … Read entire article »
Putting the Focus on men for June
Every June at Women’s Focus, we train our eyes on the guys. It’s Father’s Day, it’s grilling and lake time — summer’s here and we celebrate all the ways guys can strut their stuff. This year, my articles for the men’s issue include a look into the jobs of three different working dogs, and a piece on big boys and their big toys (vintage fire truck, anyone?). I also profile Team in Training recruiter Sarah Cundiff, who has inspired women for five years to believe that, like her, they can go from the couch in the spring to the finish line in the fall at the Nike Women’s Marathon. Remember to look for your free issue all over town at Dillons, newsstands, and lots of other locations. … Read entire article »

Feast or Famine
While the Hubs dealt with the famine, I’ve been reaping the rewards of the feast. It’s been almost three weeks since he got the not-totally-unexpected pink slip. I put out the word that I had some built-in childcare, and therefore believed that translated into extra work time. So I was able to accept a couple of assignments beyond my usual trim diet of freelance work. More of a heavy appetizer than an afternoon snack. It wouldn’t come close to offsetting was the Hubs was losing in pay, but at least I felt like I had stepped up. What I did not factor in was a family-wide epidemic of cough and fever–myself included–to suck up a lot of that “extra” time. Or the snowstorm that kept us off the roads and on each … Read entire article »

Spring Assignments
Women’s Focus has been keeping me busy! I’ve done articles on choosing a veterinarian, summer pet health, the Relay For Life benefiting the American Cancer Society, and summer activities for kids. Whew! On a more serious note, I also had the privilege of interviewing Denise Brown, sister of Nicole Brown Simpson, about her work as a activist against domestic violence. Denise spoke at a fundraiser for the Wichita Women’s Initiative Network, a remarkable organization that has done a lot of good despite flying pretty low under the public radar. Hopefully Denise’s appearance helped change that. WIN provides a secure workplace, access to education and job training, and therapy for women who have left abusive relationships. The two clients I interviewed had made giant steps forward since leaving their abusers and getting … Read entire article »
