Do you lie to your doctor?

This week’s assignment is to track down the 5 Lies We Tell our Doctors. It got me thinking how going through three pregnancies and childbirth makes you a whole lot less self-conscious about going to the doctor. That’s a lot of hours waiting in paper gowns and shapeless drapes, reading two-month-old copies of magazines I never see anywhere else, like Good Housekeeping and Working Mother (which, don’t get me wrong, I love). When your exam does start, your bodily privacy ends. There you are, as exposed as Britney Spears exiting the limo, and if you’re really lucky there is probably a student shadowing your doc (or, in my case, midwife) that day, and she’s a hands-on learner. Spring Assignments

Women’s Focus has been keeping me busy! I’ve done articles on choosing a veterinarian, summer pet health, the Relay For Life benefiting the American Cancer Society, and summer activities for kids. Whew! On a more serious note, I also had the privilege of interviewing Denise Brown, sister of Nicole Brown Simpson, about her work as a activist against domestic violence. Denise spoke at a fundraiser for the Wichita Women’s Initiative Network, a remarkable organization that has done a lot of good despite flying pretty low under the public radar. Hopefully Denise’s appearance helped change that. WIN provides a secure workplace, access to education and job training, and therapy for women who have left abusive relationships.
